Jewish Cemetery Larnaca

Larnaca Jewish Cemetery Rehabilitation Project

The Jewish Cemetery in Larnaca is a sacred and historic site, currently serving as the final resting place for 39 individuals. It holds deep significance for the Jewish community of Cyprus and for families who seek a dignified place for remembrance, prayer, and reflection.

At present, the cemetery faces several critical infrastructure challenges that limit accessibility and compromise the respectful maintenance of the site. These include the absence of running water, unreliable electricity, and muddy access paths that make visitation difficult, particularly during winter months or memorial services.

The Rehabilitation Plan

This project proposes a comprehensive restoration and rehabilitation of the cemetery to ensure it meets the standards of dignity, safety, and accessibility expected of a sacred burial site. Planned improvements include:

  • Construction of a ceremonial hall to provide shelter and appropriate space for prayer and memorial services

  • Installation of secure fencing to protect the site from vandalism and unauthorized access

  • Development of accessible walkways to allow safe and respectful movement throughout the cemetery

  • Upgrades to water and electricity infrastructure to support maintenance, sanitation, and ceremonial needs

These enhancements will not only improve daily access but also safeguard the cemetery as a protected and honored space for future generations.

Preserving Heritage and Memory

Beyond physical improvements, this initiative is about preserving Jewish heritage in Cyprus and honoring the memory of those laid to rest in Larnaca. By improving sanitation, security, and accessibility, the cemetery will remain a place of dignity, respect, and continuity.
