Summary of the 8 Days of Chanukah

With Chanukah concluded, the Jewish Community of Cyprus looks back at an amazing 8 days of sharing the light across the island.

Activities were made for young and old, community members, friends, visitors, the general public and dignitaries across the country.

Visitors were greeted by the holiday light upon landing at Larnaca and Paphos airports. Our dedicated Chanukah booths and airport menorahs welcomed each Jewish guests with a warm and welcoming Chanukah donut, menorah and candles, and at the right times, Tefillin and Holy Shabbat candles.

Huge menorahs were also placed in each of the islands city centers. Several menorahs were placed in Larnaca, the largest of them stood proudly on Finikoudes promenade, where the first candle was lit by the Chief Rabbi of Cyprus, Rabbi Arie Zeev Raskin, who was lifted by forklift. The event was attended by thousands of people.

Every day, our community centers in Larnaca, Ayia Napa, Limassol, Nicosia and Paphos welcomed hundreds of guests, each lighting a candle and attending prayers.

On the eighth candle, the main event of the holiday was attended by the Israeli ambassador to Cyprus Mr. Sammy Revel, Deputy Mayor Larnaca Mr Iasonas Iasonides, ambassadors and dignitaries, together with a special musical performance by a band from Israel.

A moment that will stay in our hearts was when we welcomed a group of children surviving with cancer, that arrived through the Zichron Menachem association. Members of the Cyprus Jewish Community volunteered to help make a special day, which brought them a smile of happiness.

Each community center across the island worked extremely hard this year to bring the light of Chanukah to all. Hosting workshops, classes, donuts, latkes and dinners for people of all ages, each center helped fulfil the needs of thousands of people.

Every day the convoy of "Menorahmobiles", which contained no fewer than 12 vehicles, rotated the city's main streets, sharing the light and lighting up smiles on the faces of all.
